The ancient history of Yercaud is still unknown; however the first settlement in the region is believed to be developed from Kanchipuram during the Telugu kings. The small hill town is said to be discovered by the British in 1842 by the Madras Presidency Governor, Sir Thomas Muroe and David Cockburn who was the Scottish collector of the district of Salem. Later the district was bought by the European Zamindar, Mr. G.F. Fisher.
