Have you ever ridden on the back of the largest mammal on the earth – the elephant? Well if you haven’t had a ride as yet then it is a joy to experience a ride on the back of the elephant. Elephant riding has become an integral part of tourists’ visits in India especially in the Wildlife Sanctuaries & National Parks. Elephants help one to go to the densest part of the forests where even jeeps cannot travel.
In India some of the places where one can go for Elephant ride are the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve. The elephant being a slow animal is the safest bet to commute to the interiors of the forest. At Jim Corbett the elephant ride is through a village which is located on the banks of the Ramganga river. The village is dependent on the forest for its survival. One can get to see a plethora of fauna and flora and mammals from the back of the elephant. Some of the animals that can be spotted in the park are the wild elephant, barking deer, ghoral, sambhar, rhesus monkey, Wild boar, jackal, porcupine, langur, civets etc. T
One can also see the crocodile, turtles and otters from the back of the elephant in and around Ramganga river. This park being a bird watching paradise helps tourists to get a glimpse of a variety of winged creatures while riding the elephant.
In olden times Elephants were ridden by Kings and people of the royal lineage. Kings used elephants as a mode of transport and also as a powerful weapon in the battlefield. The sight of this powerful animal is so daunting that enemies would be scared by the sheer size and might of this royal animal.
Elephant safaris are the safest and best way to explore the interior and remote parts of the National Park.
Elephants that are used for the Elephant Safaris are equipped with a howdah, which is a large seat on which mahout and the tourists sit. There is a large umbrella over the riders head. The slow and steady movement of the elephant helps one to have a close view of the wild animals safely.
Some places where Elephant Safaris are common are the forest areas of Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. Elephant Safari is also popular in the jungles of Assam in the northeast India.
In the north in a couple of Wildlife sanctuaries elephants are used for riding up the rough and difficult terrain. In the south in Kerala the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is popular for their Elephant safaris. Some Other places where you can go for Elephant Safari in India are the Amber Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
