The monastery of Thiksey is situated about 20 km far from the town of Leh and is situated at an altitude of 3600 m above the sea level. Thiksey Monastery is one of the most important monasteries in Ladakh. The main leader of the Gelug School, Tiksey Rinpoche in Ladakh is seated here. The monastery houses the 15 metre tall Champa, one of the largest Buddhist statues. You can witness one of the finest examples of Ladakhi architecture which contains numerous stupas, statues, thankas, wall paintings, swords and a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings. There are many other precious objects that can be seen here.
