Situated in the state of Kerala in south of India, Thekkady is a picturesque tourist spot that offers fascinating experiences to explore the natural splendors in its full bloom. However, there is not so much to know about the history of Thekkady as the region was dominated by various tribes in earlier times. One of the major attraction here is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary which is dated back to 1934 when certain initiatives were taken by the state government in order to establish the Nellikampathy Sanctuary. The Periyar is spread over an area of 777 square km and was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Blessed with fabulous landscapes, rich flora and fauna and wide variety of wild animals and birds, the sanctuary is a famous tourist destination since the day of its establishment.
