Known for its architectural splendor, the StaknaMonastery is located on a 60 m high isolated rock and a popular tourist destination in Ladakh. The Gompa is known for preserving the cultural and religious heritage of Buddhism. It was built by Chosje Jamyang Palkar, a great Buddhist follower in 1580 and serves as a treasure trove of various paintings and artifacts of Buddhism era. It was also known as Tiger’s Nose monastery as it is located on a rock which looks like a tiger leaping up to the sky. One of the striking attractions of the monastery is the magnificent statue of Avalokitesvara which was brought from the state of Assam. Moreover, it also houses a museum that displays a good collection of arms and armory of bygone times.
