Monastery

On the hilltop near the River Indus is the Spituk Monastery. Located at a distance of 18 km from Leh, it was founded by Od-De in the 11th century. The monastery has a rich collection of ancient masks, antique arms, icons and numerous Thankas and belonged to the Kadampa School. From 17th to 19th days of the eleventh month, an annual festival known as the Spituk festival is celebrated here. Higher up the hill, there is another shrine known as Mahakal Temple dedicated to the deity of Vajrabhairava. Include this spiritual destination in your list of visiting places in Leh.
