Constructed in 1655 by the King Deldon Namgyal, Shey Gompa is a two- storey monastery having a splendid image of seated Lord Buddha. This huge statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is made up of copper sheets glided with gold and is renowned as the biggest metal statue in Ladakh. All the walls around the statue are tastefully designed and painted with different images. A library is also housed in the lower storey of the monastery adorned with beautiful murals of Buddha figures in different hand gestures.
