Covered with dense forest with an area of 345 sq kms, the Muthanga or Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is a wonderful home for spotting wild animals and birds. The sanctuary is quite rich in flora and fauna and inhabits a large variety of animal species such as deer, elephants, big cats, Malabar squirrel, sambhar, panther, langurs, bison and bonnet macaques. The rare species of Slender Loris can also be spotted in the sanctuary. In addition, it also houses various reptile, amphibians and bird species that can be easily seen scattered along the rivers and rock sides in the sanctuary. Special permission is needed to visit the place from the forest authorities.
