Mount Athos, Greece - Monasteries
Mounting high from the easternmost "leg" of the Chalcidice isthmus and extensively well-known as "Holy Mountain", Mt. Athos is definitely not the ‘heart' of Macedonia, geologically, but in terms of culture, it has played an essential role for more than 1,000 years. Throughout good and bad times it has been the hub of Eastern Christian Orthodox Monasticism, and the 20 monasteries scattering the treeless gradients are its exceptional, substantial manifestation. The self-governing communities form the oldest monastic republic still in existence, and it is hard to believe that this isolated spot on Earth has never ceased to mightily persuade the outside world, from which it is essentially cut off.
