Associated with the dynamic influence and personality of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the university has been developed as a pioneer for defining the standards in the field of literary excellence and moral education. Founded by Tagore in 1901 as a small ashram with only five students, the university today has been recognized as one of the best institutions of international culture and studies. It is divided into two campuses- one at Santiniketan and another is at Sriniketan. The huge campus of the university is further sectioned into several houses associated with different aspects of arts, culture, education, music and dance. The Kala Bhavan and the Sangeet Bhavan are the two centers contributed most to Indian art and music. Tagore established the first language school in India of Chinese and Japanese which are called as the Cheena Bhawan and the Nippon Bhavan. The secondary school of Patha Bhavan is worth visiting where the study is still given to the students in open air under the trees. Nevertheless, the beautiful university complex is also dotted with various other attractions for the tourists such as the Deer Park, the craft centre of Amar Kutir, and the picturesque green paddy fields and palm trees that make is a great place of interest to be seen in Santiniketan.
