Visakhapatnam was under the rule of King Visakha. During BC’s Visakhapatnam was a part of division Kalinga Kingdom which was under the rule of King Ashoka. Until 16th century, it was only a division of Utkala Kingdom. Later on, the city was passed over to Andhra Kings, then to the Pallava Kings. The place was named after the lord Subrahmanyeswara who is the deity of valour and the succeeding brother of lord Ganesha. The beauty of Visakhapatnam can be compared to Sakhi Visakha. Many legends imply that Vishakha and Radha were given birth on the same day and both of them were equally gorgeous. People say that Andhra king was overwhelmed by the prettiness and constructed a temple to honor the deity Visakha. The union territory of Viskhapatnam was then under the rule of Chalukyas and Vengi Andhra rulers. The Pallava kings had a rule over the land. From the 10th to the 16th centuries, the Orissa kings like Gajapathi ruled the region. In the 11th and 12th centuries many kings built beautiful temples which of historic value now. The natural port was used to export many products like paddy, iron, tobacco, coal, muslin and even many of the textile products were exported through this port.
