The USS Arizona Memorial is Hawaii's is one of the most-visited tourist destinations, with more than 11/2 million visitors a year. In memory of the dead who drowned aboard the sinking USS "Arizona", a cenotaph was opened in 1962 which accommodates up to 3000 visitors daily.The monument was erected above the ghastly battleship, parts of which still project above the water. The gleaming-white buoyant building, about 197feet long, contains a large semi open-air room in which visitors assemble. At the end of the monument there is a memorial on which the names of the 1177 victims, including the commandant and his deputy, are carved on a wall of Vermont marble.
