Also known as the Golden Namgyal Lhatse, Tawang Monastery is the most famous attraction for the tourists in the city. Renowned as the second oldest monastery in the world after Lhasa, it is said to be 400 years old. Located on the base of a hill top at an elevation of 3000 meters, the monastery was established by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in the 17th century. This magnificent monastery is comprised of a three storey building which is 140 square meters high. The main attraction of the place is massive golden statue of Buddha which is 8 m high. It can accommodate about 600 monks.
