The city of Somnath is dotted with a treasured history and it is the presence of splendid Somnath Temple by which the city got its name. Though, there is not so much known about the early history of the town but it is believed that the first ever temple of Somnath was built even before the beginning of the Christian period. Mythological, it is said that Somraj or Lord Moon built it originally out of gold. Another legend says that this was the place where the massacre scene of the Yadavas took place after the subsequent death of Lord Krishna. Somnath rose and fell several times because of its treasure and wealth but every time it got reconstructed till 15th century when a new temple was built nearby. Thus the history of Somnath is a long saga of demolition and reconstruction in the various centuries. In 1706, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ruined it completely and after about 200 years, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel took serious efforts to reconstruct in the year 1947. Presently, Somnath is a popular tourist destination of India that draws a large number of pilgrims and tourists from all the nook and corner of the globe.
