History of Ranikhet

history-of-Ranikhet

However, there is not so much to be told about the history of the hill town of Ranikhet. But according to the folk tales, it is said that Ranikhet or queen’s meadow got its name from Rani Padmini, the queen of Raja Sukherdev. Once Rani visited this charming hill station and enthralled by the scenic charm and calmness of the place. She decided to stay at this lovely place and when Raja got to know about her queen’s desire, he built a palace for his beloved and named the place as Ranikhet.

The region around the hill town was also ruled by the local rulers of Kumaon and later on by the British. In 1869, the British developed this area for their troops and made it a cantonment town. And now it is still a cantonment town under the headquarters of Kumaon regimental center.
