Pura Besakih, one of the most holy sites in Bali is suspended high on the gradients of Bali's Mount Agung and is extensively referred to as the "Mother Temple" of Hinduism in Bali. The name of Pura Besakih is perhaps consequential from the snake Basuki that features in Hindu legends. If one visits Pura Besakih temple during the time of the annual temple carnival, one cannot help but wonder at the place. In addition to the odalan festival, the Pura Besakih also serves as the esteemed venue of Bali's most significant temple festival, the Eka Dasa Rudra, which is celebrated every hundred years. The Eka Dasa Rudra festival previously took place in 1979.
