Located in the vicinity of the famous Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Periyar Lake is a natural attraction in Thekkady. It was conceived by a British Engineer named V. Pennyycuick who was the chief engineer of Madras Presidency and is one of the largest artificial lakes of Asia. The lake serves as a reservoir of the Mullaperiyar Dam that is the main source of water to the forest and also fosters a number of endangered species of wildlife in the park. Boating facility is also available for the tourists across the lake that offers some of the excellent views of the entire sanctuary.
