Most visitors to northern Mauritius take the time to visit Pamplemousses for its well-known botanical gardens, which are worth a diversion if you fancy an afternoon away from the seashore. Officially well-known as the Sir SeewoosagurRamgoolam Botanical Gardens and occasionally referred to as the Royal Botanical Gardens, they feature a dramaticdiversity of widespread and foreign plant species. The close by decommissioned Beau Plan sugar factory has also been rehabilitated into a captivating museum. The township itself was named for the grapefruit-like citrus trees that the Dutch introduced to Mauritius from Java. It has a characteristically Mauritian feel and is a million miles away from Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches.
