Nassau, Bahamas - Scenic Beauty
Nassau, the capital, lies on the coast of a secludedport on New Providence Island. Its populace of 180,000 makes this the biggestconurbation in the archipelago, and in fact approximately two-thirds of the country’s inhabitants live on this isle. The city was founded by the British in the mid 1600s as Charlestown, but was renamed in 1695 in honour of William III of Orange-Nassau, successor to the English realm. It became a trendyasylum for pirates during the 18th century, including the well-known and frightening Blackbeard. Later in the same century, the Spanish attempted to attack Nassau, and in 1776, American revolutionaries momentarily gained control of the metropolis.
