Nalanda, Patna, Bihar - Higher education and flourished university

Monuments

The ruins of the once famous ancient centre of higher learning, the Nalanda University are situated about 90 km from the main city. Spread over an area of about 14 hectares, the Nalanda structures were made up of red bricks. A Chinese traveller, Hieun Tsang wrote about the University during its peak years. His writings indicate that about 1000 faculty members and more than 10,000 students were a part of various disciplines during the olden times. However in 1193, Turkish Muslim invaders destroyed the flourishing university. Plans are on to restore its past glory and revive it as the Nalanda International University.
