Merida is one of the popular holiday destinations in Mexico. Merida is the capital and biggest metropolis of the Mexican state of Yucatán which is situated in the northwest part of the state and is about 35 kilometres from the Gulf of Mexico shore. Merida lies at the north end of a plateau of spongy sandstone which is well suited to the farming of a type of agave-yielding henequen fibre. Before the advancement of manmade fibres the henequen industry brought affluence to this township. The town of Merida was founded on January 6th 1542 by the conquistador Francisco Montejo, well-known as El Mozo.
