Matara traditionally fist in to the region called Ruhana, one of the three realms in Sri Lanka. Initial Indians who arrived to the isle nation according to the Mahawansa established in the region, beside the banks of Nilwala River. Matara was governed by Sinhala kings for thousands of years and this is obvious by the ancient temples and memorials constructed by them such as temples in Dondra (Devinuwara) and Weherahena. The temple in the hub of the township was also constructed by mighty ancient kings and now it is a very famous holy place among the Buddhists in the area.
