There’s something persistentlyattractive about Mahébourg, with its lethargic feel, a mix of old and new and few idiosyncratic sights. Founded in 1805, Mahébourg was named after the famed French governor Mahé de Labourdonnais. The city started life as a busy harbour, but these days it’s something of a backwater, with a small fishing flotilla and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Lion Mountain stands guard to the north while out to sea a smidgen of islands mark the far side of the mere, which changes from one extreme colour to another at great speed.
Mahébourg’s most sensible situate is its interesting history museum. The cathedral also merits a quick glance in passing and, if time allows, it’s worth venturing just north of township to visit a charming old biscuit factory.
