This pioneering institution of higher learning in the state was established in 1947, the year of Indian independence. It is named after the last illustrious king of Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur who was also its chief architect. Though it is affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the college itself has successfully managed to maintain high standards of academic excellence through all these years. A fine specimen of erstwhile Mughal architecture, the main building of the college is worth seeing. It is noteworthy how the old but strong building has been adapted to suit the modern needs of advanced computer labs and library facilities for the students.
