Constructed around the historical Bodhi tree in the 7th century, the Mahabodhi Temple is the major highlight of Bodhgaya. This religious shrine is located at the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and is renowned as the most sacred Buddhist site in the town. It was constructed by great King Ashoka and the major attraction in the temple is the massive statue of Lord Buddha in sitting posture. The temple structure is elevated at a height of 50 meters and houses delicately carved stone railings encircling the complex. It also houses an ancient Shivalingam which was installed in 860 AD. For its artistic architecture and craftsmanship, it has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
