Laarne castle is located 11km east of Ghent. The 11th/12th C. pentagonal fort was erected to guard Ghent and re-erected in the 17th C. Today it has two internal patios and a large keep on the right-hand fascia and is bounded by a moat. A stone arcaded overpass leads to the doorway. The center is supplied in the French and Antwerp styles; with remarkably gorgeous Brussels tapestries portraying the Emperor Maximilian hunting, after cartoons by Bernard van Orley. On the first floor is an anthology of silverwork of European division. It is the Claude Dallemagne Kollektion, which includes primarily French and Belgian silver from the 15th-18th C.
