The history of Kovalam states that it was earlier an unexplored secluded beach of Kerala and first of all,it came into existence when Sethu Laxmi Bai, the Regent Queen of Travancore constructed a beach resort here in 1920 which was known as the Halcyon Castle. Later her nephew, Maharaja of Travancore brought this place in front of the public’s sight. After that during the British reign, the European guests of the King of Travancore were invited to this captivating place and the secluded beauty and natural charm of Kovalam developed it as a favoured beach destination in the 1930. The British found this beach resort quiet beautiful and impressive and started promoting it as a major tourist destination in Kerala. However, it was in 1970’s when this enchanting destination of Kovalam experienced a real boost in the tourism sector with the coming of hippies. Soon after, this small and idyllic fishing village of Kovalam emerged as a popular holiday destination and beach resort of the country.
