Kathmandu, Nepal - Palaces

Scenic, Palace

Kathmandu, the capital and chief conurbation in Nepal, is situated in the eastern half of the country in the gorge of the same name at an altitude of 4266 ft. In recent years Khatmandu has experienced a colossal exodus to the conurbation, and today has a population of over 600,000. Today Kathmandu has more of a big-city ambiance than either Bhaktapur or Patan and possesses a more urbanized infrastructure. Among its wealth of historic edifices, it can boast the biggest of the antique royal palaces as well as numerous Rana palaces and other significant shrines. Despite the development which has made a contemporary city of Kathmandu, the old center still retains something of a medieval air.
