Katajanokka Uspensky Cathedral, Finland - Monument

Monuments

At the east end of Helsinki's Market Square is an overpass leading on to the island of Katajanokka. Straight away on the left, significantly located on a hill, stands the Orthodox Uspensky Cathedral (1868), with gilded domes with icons and frescoes in interior. The Katajanokka region displays Finnish Art Nouveau architecture at its crest, and it is well worth taking time to look round some of the buildings and into their patios. Here too is one of the most imposing of Engel's buildings, the Naval Barracks. After a long period of pass over, it has been refurbished and is now engaged by the Foreign Ministry.
