A pleasant and quaint expanse of emerald and blue water looped by tropical forests is the famous man-made Kaptai Lake with 680 sq. km of area. From Kaptai along the Chittagong road, lies the ancient Chit Morang Buddhist temple having beautiful Buddhist statues. Kaptai Lake is the biggest man-made freshwater lake in Bangladesh. It is situated near Kaptai Township in the Rangamati District. The lake results from the edifice of the Kaptai Dam in 1962 for a huge hydro-electric plant on the Karnaphuli River. Kaptai Lake comprises of 2 immense reservoirs joined by a narrow vale.
