History of Jabalpur
The history of Jabalpur isdated back to the Mahabharata time according to which this city was the meditation place of Sage Jabali with whom the name of Jabalpur is associated. Jabalpur has been a mute witness of a number of dynasties. The historical background of Jabalpur narrates a glorious saga of ancient kings and their bravery. In earlier times, the present day Jabalpur was said as Avanti which was reined by several rulers including Sungas, Guptas and Harshas. Later in the 8th century, the Kalchuri dynasty took the possession of Avanti and made Jabalpur as their capital. However the Gonds seized it in the 12th century and it emerged as the kingdom of Gondwana. Then came the Mughals and the Marathas who ruled over this powerful kingdom respectively.
In the 18th century, the British tookthe control of Jabalpur in their hands and developed it as the commission headquarters of the Narmada and Sagar territories. In the early 20th century, it was declared as the headquarters of a brigade of Southern Army by the British. During the freedom struggle, the great city of Jabalpur played an important role and experienced several riots and outbreaks soon after the Independence.An important event in the history of Jabalpur was the occurrence of Tripuri Congress session in the year 1939 under the leadership of great Indian freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose. After getting Independence in 1947, Jabalpur was declared as an independent city of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
