The Ita Fort is one of the most significant architectural sites in the city. In fact, the city of Itanagar draws its name from the Ita Fort that is situated in the center of Papum Pare district in the state. The fortress is said to be erected by the Ahom rulers who resided in this region during the 14th and the 15th century. This remarkable, sporadically shaped building is assembled from thousands of bricks. This gigantic sized fort is alleged to encompass three dissimilar gates located on the western, eastern and southern side of the citadel walls. Ita Fort is without doubt one of the most outstanding structural sites in Itanagar.
