Situated in the Western Ghats, the Indira Gandhi National Park is among the largest sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu. Anaimalais is the famous name for this sanctuary and which literally means the Mountain of Elephants. Hovering over an area of 958 sq. kms, the sanctuary also supplies the water for power supply and agricultural purpose. The sanctuary was established in 1974 but got notification as National Park in 1989. Not only animals resides in this sanctuary but one can see tribal people residing over there among which the main tribes are Malai Malasar, Pulayar, Eravalr, Kadar and Malasar.
