Scenic, Palace

The main attraction of the Marunouchi district is undeniably the Imperial Palace with its parks bounded by walls and moats which date back to 1613. It is the home to the royally family. The Imperial Palace stands on the place where in 1457 the Feudal Lord Ota Dokan constructed a first citadel, which served as the focal point from which the city of Tokyo steadily reached outwards. After capturing the fort in 1590, Tokugawa Ieyasu restructured it, making it the strongest in the terrain. Later it was burnt down in a catastrophic fire in 1657 and only partly refurbished. Until 1868 the grand palace was the abode of the Tokugawa Shoguns.
