Gripsholm Castle, a regal castle from 1537 in situated Mariefred. Gripsholm Castle is one of Sweden’s ten royal palaces and is regarded as one of Sweden´s finest historical monuments. Itsstunning situation near the town of Mariefred by the lake Mälaren makes this anextraordinary day excursion. The castle was constructed by King Gustav Vasa in 1537 and later extended by Gustav III. The site earlier housed a citadel from the late 1300´s belonging to anaffluent family, but was confiscated by Gustav Vasa in 1526. Today the castle is a historical museum well worth a visit, counting the Governmental collection of portraits.
