Gibbon wildlife sanctuary is known as the only sanctuary in India that serves as the home to the hoolock gibbon, the only ape species in country. Blessed with semi evergreen forests, this place is surrounded by tea gardens and is located at the banks of River Brahmaputra. With richness of varied flora and fauna, this sanctuary is home to seven species of primates and also to other animals, mammals and birds. Some of the popular species seen in here are capped langur, pigtail macaque, stump tailed macaque, rhesus macaque, Assamese macaque, slow loris, leopard, Chinese pangolin, giant squirrel, barking deer, sambhar and common teal etc. Moreover, it also houses some species of resident and migratory birds including Indian pied hornbill, osprey, hill myna, osprey, spotted dove, drongo cuckoo, red jungle fowl and white winged wood duck etc. The best time to visit this sanctuary is from October to February.
