Fort Charlotte, Bahamas - Fort Charlotte- Magnificent Structure of Colossal Stone Blocks

Scenic, Fort

Fort Charlotte, situated just off West Bay Street, overlooks the harbour and is the biggest of the island’s three forts. It’s a magnificent structure of colossal stone blocks, moats, and bridges. The fort was built between 1787 and 1790 for the purpose of protecting Nassau Harbour’s westerly foyer. Within this colossal stone structure, you can wander a maze of passageways and tiny rooms, dungeons and barracks, wondering as to how the stronghold could have survived in the humid atmosphere. Named after King George III's spouse, it was constructed by Gov. Lord Dunmore, who was also the last royal governor of New York and Virginia.
