Central Coffee Research Institute was established in 1915 at Koppa Laboratory to combat leaf diseases of the coffee plants. Later it got transformed into an experimental institution in order to solve various issues associated with the plantation and cultivation of coffee seeds. Extended over an area of 130 hectares, the centre has a plantation area of 80 hectares and is the frontrunner coffee research institute in the entire Asia. With having a great collection of germplasm and material imported from different countries, CCRI is periodically visited by a number of tourists seeking information about the plantation of coffee crops in Chikmagalur.
