Mauritius’ only national park is a marvellously wild vastness of deep forest covering 3.5% of the isle’s surface and home to over 300 species of blossoming plants and nine species of bird exclusive to Mauritius, including the well-known pink pigeon which is staging a very gradual comeback from the verge of extinction.It’s feasible to drive or take a bus through the park and stop for great views alongside the way but the best way to see the park is certainly on foot. A system of mountaineering trails interweave the wild and void Black River Gorges National Park. While the markings have enhanced in recent years and there are good maps accessible, you should check the road and the current state of the trails at the information centres before setting off.
