Berlin Wall, Germany - Wall

Scenic

The Berlin Wall was built in the dead of night and for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West. Its demolition, which was almost as instantaneous as its construction, is famous around the world. The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division, situated in the middle of the capital. Located at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it will ultimately extend along 1.4 kilometers of the earlier border band. The memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the conserved grounds behind it and is thus able to express a notion of how the border buttresses developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here together with the potted historical remnants and traces of border blockages on show help to make the history of Germany’s division understandable to visitors.
