Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka - The Ancient Metropolis

Scenic

Anuradhapura is one of the antique capitals of Sri Lanka, famed for its well-conserved relics of ancient Lankan society. This place served as a capital of Sri Lanka from the 4th century BC, until the beginning of the 11th century AD. During this period it lingered as the one of the most stronghold and resilient centers of political power and metropolitan life in South Asia. The ancient metropolis, considered sanctified to the Buddhist world, is today enclosed by monasteries wrapping an area of over sixteen square miles. Anuradhapura is also momentous in Hindu myth as the enchanted capital of the Asura King Ravana in the Ramayana.
