The place of Alacahoyuk is said to be one of the most imperative archaeological discoveries in Anatolia. It was here that the Majestic Graves dating to the Bronze Age were discovered. Archaeologists found the graves of a chain of Hatti kings and queens who were buried here between 2300 and 2000 BC in rectangular plots roofed with wood and soil in noticeable imitation of houses. A mould of one of these crypts in the Çorum Museum shows that the dead were buried with silver or bronze sun disc embellishments. The most imposing tombstone here is the Sfenksli Kapı (Sphinx Gate), even though these sphinxes, like those at HattuÅŸa, are in fact copies of the originals.
