Also known as Sarla Ashram, Lakshmi Ashram is an educational institute that was established in 1948 by Catherine Hillman who later on named as Sarla Ben. She was a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and left London in 1931 after getting influenced with the movements of Bapu. Located at the foothills of Himalayas, the ashram also runs a boarding school only for girls. The main motto behind the establishment of this ashram is to help poor girls of Kumaon region to become educated and independent. Thus the girls here are also taught several skills such as growing vegetables, cooking, cleaning and caring animals. Many orphaned girls and women also find abode in the ashram and make themselves safe and independent.
