Built on a rock island, the Kulaba Fort is an imposing structure in Alibag overlooking the Alibag Beach. This impressive sea fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj in 1680 and is a wonderful historical spot for the visitors. The main entrance of the fort is called Maha Darwaja and is decorated with numerous beautiful carvings of tigers, elephants and peacocks. Various shrines, a small water tank and a well are located inside the fort. It also houses palaces where the members of the Angre family used to live. The fort has a wide parapet with 17 bastions and the 18th bastion is called sarjyakot which was built to answer the artillery of Hirakot at the shore of Alibag.
