Built 400 years back, the Kochijo, or Kochi castle is one of the major heritages of Japan. The citadel had served the Yamauchi lords for 16 generations until the Meiji Period. The former lords had intended their fortress to ensure a complete protection, as is evident from every ingredient of the castle architecture. The tough wooden Otemon Gate reveals how thorough the security was. Though the fortress was never susceptible by any enemy, it couldn't escape the noxious fumes which condensed the unique castle formations. The monument existing now is in fact a rebuilding of the main construction and is said to be as the “Important Cultural Properties", and remains untouched as one of the best visitor locations in Japan.
