Often referred to as the 'City of Gold' due to its rich gold-mining legacy, or simply 'Jo'burg', Johannesburg is an outstanding conurbation of contrast and considerable wealth, despite its relative youth, being founded just over 120 years ago, in 1886. The Johannesburg of today is South Africa's economic capital and in fact vast city, being one of the biggest in the whole of Africa, after only Cairo (Egypt). Currently the world's largest inland conurbation, Johannesburg features a number of equipped suburbs, along with a modern metropolis centre which is packed with soaring skyscrapers, huge shopping complexes and much enthusiasm.
