The ‘Round House’ or Golghar as it is popularly called is situated west to the Gandhi maidan of the city. It was originally a granary constructed in July 1786 by Captain John Garstin for preserving food for the British army. It has a massive storage capacity of 140000 tonnes. A spiral stairway of 300 steps leads to the top of the monument which is about 29 metres high. Here one can experience a breathtakingly beautiful panoramic view of the entire city. While it was being built, it was said to be the tallest building in the city.
