The Golden Gate Bridge's vaulting, orange arches amidst the stony seascape of San Francisco Bay have made it the West Coast's most enduring pictogram and the city's most popular tourist attraction. The bridge's name, "Golden Gate" actually refers to the luminous reflection of the sun upon the bay's cove just west of the bridge -- rather than the bright orange paint that sets it apart from its mundane sister just south, the Bay Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge straddling the Golden Gate, the strait between San Francisco and Marin County to the north. The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge cross in the world when it was completed in 1937, and has become a globally recognized emblem of San Francisco and California.
