The theater is wondered for its outstanding acoustics, which allow almost perfect precision of unamplified spoken word from the proscenium or skênê to all 15,000 spectators, in spite of their seating. The original 34 rows were extended in Roman times by an additional 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theaters, the outlook on a blossoming landscape behind the skênê is an essential part of the theater itself and is not to be masked. But as you see one of the purest magnum opuses of Greek architecture - a therapeutic and cultural hub dating from the 4th century and devoted to the god of medicine and you’ll be struck by the ancient magnificence of the Theater.
