Bodh Gaya is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage centre in the world and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. It is here that Gautam Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree which is better known as the ‘tree of awakening’. The Maha Bodhi Temple present here is an architectural delight as well as a place of great religious importance. Carvings of Buddha in different aspects can be seen adorning the walls of the temple alongside inscriptions of sacred text. In 2002 this temple acquired the distinction of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
